THE v1.3 REFRESH.

Nine gated releases, one direction: the interface got its identity, and the field work got sharper. Everything below is in the build at code cutoff.

  • Chamfer-cut interface Every panel across the suite now carries the 45° cut, with the stencil wordmark and the trident-shield emblem. The old tier chip is retired for a cleaner head bar.
  • Mission card console The home screen runs a live card: incident name, time on task, mesh node count, check-in countdown, CPU sparkline.
  • Waypoints on the mesh Native Meshtastic waypoints decoded on-device — and shared both directions with the phone app in your pocket.
  • Check-in watchdog Overdue check-ins raise a suite-wide alert, repeat every ten minutes, and can broadcast MAN-DOWN across the mesh.
  • Field forms SITREP and ICS-213 with prefill: full-fidelity save on the unit, compact ≤200-character send over the mesh.
  • Channel share A live QR puts a teammate on your channel in one scan — and it pauses in night red, because a glowing white square has no business on a dark ridge.
  • Multi-brand radios Heltec, RAK/WisBlock, LILYGO, Seeed/XIAO, and Nordic nRF52 boards; serial-bridge limits (CP210x/CH9102) documented in-app, not glossed.
  • Field Update Signed packages, a sha-256 manifest verified twice, a regression battery before acceptance, and one-tap rollback.
  • Identity card Export the unit's identity to a stick; two-tap restore with an automatic pre-restore backup. Self-Test adds a unit integrity check.
  • Two editions, branded boot The same suite installs on Raspberry Pi 5 and x86 Ubuntu with edition-aware setup — and Pi builds boot branded from power-on to console, and back down at shutdown.

v1.3.0-rc1 is at code cutoff, in production testing. The screenshots in this guide were captured on v1.2 — new captures of the chamfer-cut interface land as testing wraps, and every one will be a real frame, same as today.

One tap on the ☾ in the top bar and this whole page flips — because on the unit, so does every app. Night mode is a red chosen for what the human eye physically does in the dark. Try it, then see the real thing below.

A WHITE SCREEN
IS A LIABILITY.

Night vision lives in your rod cells — and rods are nearly blind to deep red while wide open to green and blue. The instant a screen shows any green or blue, it starts burning down the dark adaptation you spent an hour building, and on a ridgeline it announces exactly where you are.

GREYFATHOM's night mode is pure red channel — green and blue held at zero. Contrast comes from brightness, not colour. It isn't a dimmed white screen and it isn't a tint bolted over the map; it's the real thing, and it flips every app at once — Maps, Comms, SDR, the console — not just one.

One tap takes the whole terminal dark-safe on your way out. Rather not think about it? Add the ambient light sensor and it crosses to red on its own as the light drops, and back at dawn.

Straight answer

Red night mode isn't ours to claim — plenty of devices have one. What's ours is the discipline: pure red channel, every app and not just the map, tuned so the screen stays readable at arm's length while your eyes stay adapted. On the hardware panel, that's the difference between a checkbox and coming home able to see.

Manual is standard. Automatic is the upgrade. The one-tap switch ships on every unit; the ambient light sensor that flips it for you is an add-on option, fitted at build or by return.

New in the suite

THE WHOLE RADIO,
FROM THE TERMINAL.

The Meshtastic phone apps are great — until your phone is dead or absent. Radio Config puts the entire node configuration on the terminal itself, built and tested against the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4. Every setting the device and the phone apps expose — over USB, or over Bluetooth LE so a paired radio can sit on a mast while you configure it from your hand.

  • The full LoRa link. Region, modem preset or manual bandwidth/SF/CR, hop limit, TX power up to the V4's ~28 dBm, frequency slot, and the low-noise amp.
  • All eight channels. Name, encryption key, uplink/downlink — plus a share URL that clones your channel set onto another node.
  • Every module. MQTT, Telemetry, Store & Forward, Detection Sensor, Neighbor Info, Range Test, Canned Messages — each as plain, labelled controls.
  • Nodes and messages. See who you've heard with signal, hops, and battery, and broadcast to the mesh from the same screen.
  • Safe by default. Nothing writes to the radio until you press Apply; reboot, shutdown, and factory reset each confirm first.

02 · GFT-5 MINI

NOT A BOARD
IN A BUMPER.

Most "rugged" handhelds are a consumer board wrapped in rubber. The GFT-5 is a gasketed carbon-nylon chassis designed around the electronics from the first millimetre — every standoff, rail, and gasket groove cut from one parametric model.

Inside: a Raspberry Pi 5 running your full Linux stack, a Heltec V4 riding its own bay with nylon clamp posts so nothing shorts a GPIO pad, and an L76K GNSS feeding position straight into the mesh.

The 16 mm button would have looked absurd on this wall — 44% of the side. We measured, sized down to 12 mm, and re-cut the nut relief when the mesh probe found the nut colliding with a chamfer. That is the level this thing is built to.

Thermal architecture

TWO BACKS.
ONE CHASSIS.

The Pi 5's SoC sits face-down against the rear shell. Bolt on the machined 6061-T6 cold-plate and heat leaves through a short, direct path — no fans, no vents, nothing to clog.

Not ready for the cold-plate? Print the honeycomb rear instead. Pointy-top cells, 5 mm across flats, 43% open area, and enough wall left to bond an ePTFE membrane behind it — air moves, water doesn't.

Swap between them without touching a single internal component. The mounting geometry is identical because both come from the same generator.

THE MESH
STARTS HERE.

LoRa doesn't need towers. Every node you add extends the network for everyone else on it. Hand these to a team and they stay in contact across terrain that eats cell coverage alive.

Both units share the same sealed construction: a complete TPU seal family — face-frame gasket, display gasket, button pad, tethered USB-C plug, pogo cap. Nothing is an afterthought, because nothing was added after the fact.

These two shells are byte-frozen against a verified baseline. Every time we change anything else in the line, they're re-checked to prove they didn't move.

How to choose. Capability is identical — you are choosing a screen and a keyboard, not a feature set. Take the GFT-7 if the unit travels on your back and gets opened on uneven surfaces. Take the GFT-X if you will sit at it for an hour, read a map at arm's length, or hand it to someone else to read. One more difference worth weighing: the GFT-X's Pelican 1500 is IP67-rated closed (Pelican's figure, case unmodified); the GFT-7's Vault V100 is weather-resistant, not waterproof — so if the unit will meet real water, the GFT-X is the one.

The faceplate

The front of a GF terminal is a single printed plate: honeycomb venting, framed windows, an engraved data plate, and the trident. The same cell geometry as the GFT-5 rear, at a different scale. Below, the base plates in silver.

Blackout

The same plate with nothing bright on it. Engraving in matte graphite instead of bronze, silver, or gold — legible up close, quiet at a distance. Available on any tier; the tier is recorded on the data plate rather than in the finish.

GFT-X Blackout

Chosen when a unit shouldn't catch light or attention. It is a finish, not a capability.

Blackout changes how the unit looks, and nothing else. It does not alter emissions, sealing, or what the radios do. A blackout Command terminal transmits exactly as loudly as a gold one.

The full software is on the card the day it arrives, with every tool enabled from the first boot. There are no tiers, no unlock keys and no licence upgrade path. What a tool can do depends on what hardware is fitted — and that is the only thing that costs more, because it is a physical part.

Nothing to unlock

Every tool in the suite is in the image already. There is no licence server to expire, no account to deactivate and no key to lose. A terminal that works on the bench works the same on the tenth year of a dead network.

Hardware decides capability

Comms needs a LoRa radio on the board. Position and Maps need a GNSS receiver. The spectrum tools need a receiver on the USB port. Fit the part and the tool comes alive; leave it off and the tool tells you what it is waiting for.

One master image per architecture. The launcher probes for hardware at start and builds the menu from what it finds.

Every claim below is measured off the actual geometry that produces your part. Not a render. Not a marketing round-up.

Single-body, manifold

Every shell is proven one connected, manifold body on disk before it ships — no holes, no stray edges. Geometry that passes a visual check can still fail on the plate, so we verify it rather than trust the eye.

Zero supports, by design

Audited in print orientation: the faceplate has 57 mm² of roofs, all at bed level. The carry slot and honeycomb have none at all. No scars, no cleanup.

Calipers, never guesses

Dimensions come off a caliper or they don't go in the model. That rule exists because inferred numbers cost us print cycles once. They don't anymore.

Nylon where it matters

The Heltec clamp posts take nylon M2 screws only. Steel there risks shorting a GPIO pad. Small detail — the kind that decides whether a device comes home working.

A carry point you can trust

The top slot loops a 12 mm strap over a 4.5 mm full-height carbon-nylon beam, printed so the layer lines run across the load, not along it.

The software suite is the same image either way — buy it once for your own Pi 5 ($99, a one-time licence with free v1.x updates), or get it pre-installed and tuned on a terminal. The signed tier keys are the same whether it's your Pi or ours. Assembled units arrive flashed and tested; kits include every printed part, the TPU seal family, and the fastener set. The LoRa radio is fitted to every unit at build, whatever the tier; the $99 Command unlock is the signed key that activates it — applied in place, no return, no re-flash. A touch panel can be added to any tier at order.

The grid gets smaller

Two teams are working sectors that overlap on paper and not on the ground. The GFT-X sits open on the tailgate with the mesh up, and every member is carrying a NODE. Each check-in lands as a marker. When the second team clears a draw, the picture updates for everyone who can hear a node — which is everyone, because nobody is asking a tower for permission.

The plan on the hood

The forecast came off the truck radio and the map came off the card. Nobody has a signal and nobody needs one. The GFT-7 opens flat on a warm hood, the assignment goes into the logbook stamped and legible, and the divisions get walked on a map that doesn't stall waiting to load a tile it never cached.

Eleven days of counts, positions, and photographs. No cloud sync to fail, no account to expire, no upload quietly retrying against a dead antenna. At the end of it, a card comes out of the terminal and goes into a reader, and the record is exactly as complete as it was in the field.

Plain terms

WHAT WE DON'T CLAIM

These are serious tools, and we'd rather you trust the spec sheet than be impressed by it. Here is what a GREYFATHOM is not.

  • Vented is not sealed The honeycomb rear moves air. It is not sealed unless an ePTFE membrane is fitted. The IP66 rating belongs to the power button, not to the enclosure it is mounted in.
  • The case ratings are Pelican's — and they're for the case closed The GFT-X's Pelican 1500 is rated IP67 by Pelican; the GFT-7's Pelican Vault V100 is rated weather-resistant, not waterproof. Those are Pelican's numbers for the unmodified case latched shut for transport — not a claim about a terminal in use with the lid open. The printed GFT enclosures we don't rate at all until we've bench-tested the seals.
  • Not military issue The trident is a design choice on a product. It represents nothing about service, procurement, or endorsement, and we won't imply otherwise.
  • Not radio-silent TAK and mesh transmit. Any unit configured to share a picture is emitting. There is no hidden mode that changes that, so we don't advertise one.
  • Not a phone replacement These run offline by design. If you need constant connectivity, buy connectivity. This is for the hours when you don't have it.
  • Not a certified navigation instrument Position and Maps are for situational awareness. They are not surveyed, not certified, and not to be used as the sole means of navigation at sea or in the air.
  • Not a licence to transmit Mesh and SDR transmit on bands that are regulated where you stand. Knowing your rules is your job, and buying a terminal doesn't do it for you.
  • Not finished, where it isn't The GFT-K is a printed first article and the GFV-20 is an architecture. Neither is verified, and we've priced them accordingly: we haven't.
  • Not a magic box that works everywhere LoRa mesh has real range limits and wants line-of-sight-ish paths. Radio Config shows you the settings that matter and Comms shows the nodes you can actually reach — so you plan around physics, not marketing.
  • Not a cloud chatbot in a box The AI Assistant is a compact open model running on the Pi's own CPU. A few words a second, it knows only its training, and it answers with zero connectivity — and you can swap the model file yourself.
  • Nothing secret is happening on the device It's a Raspberry Pi 5 running software we wrote. The apps do what they say, the data stays on the unit, and you can drop to a shell and look. No accounts, no telemetry, no phoning home.

GREYFATHOM Systems is a small shop in Iowa City — one workbench, one person, one standard. Every unit is drawn, printed, assembled, flashed, and tested by hand. Nothing here is pulled from a catalogue, drop-shipped, or finished by a line that never sees the field it's built for.

It started at that workbench, building a cyberdeck with my son. That build turned into something else — the idea that the tools people carry past the edge of coverage should be built to the same standard as the work they do out there. GREYFATHOM was founded in 2026 in Iowa City to build exactly that.

It's not a cold start. It runs from growing up on a farm in north-central Iowa through college, the U.S. Armed Forces, fintech development, custom-engineered rugged tech for defense prime contractors, to systems administration at a world-class healthcare research institution. That's the background, aimed at one problem.

It shows in the parts you'll never see on a spec sheet. Every shell comes from a single parametric model, so nothing is a one-off. Dimensions come off a caliper or they don't make it into the design. Every part is proven a single, manifold body before a printer ever runs. It's slower — and it's why a GREYFATHOM comes home working.

I build in small batches on purpose — it keeps me close enough to the bench to answer for every unit that leaves it.

The name

A fathom is the sailor's depth measure — six feet, the span of two outstretched arms, sounded by hand with a lead line. It's the oldest self-reliant way of knowing where you stand: you measured it yourself, and nothing had to transmit it to you. Grey is the condition you do it in — overcast, smoke, dusk; the hours between full coverage and none.

That's the whole name: take your own soundings when nothing outside will tell you where you stand. The trident is the hand tool of the deep — three tines, the way the suite has three tiers — set in a shield: a capable thing inside a protective shell, the way a Pi rides in a Pelican. It's a design mark, not insignia. The stencil wordmark, the engraved-through plates, the all-red night palette — everything here is marked to be handled, not displayed.
